Iran’s Supreme Court Chief Justice Gholam Hosein Mohseni Ejei said Monday that sentences will be carried out «soon» against a person arrested during protests over the death of young Mahsa Amini, opening the door to the imminent application of death sentences.

«Deterrent punishments will be determined for the main elements of the recent sedition and riots,» he has indicated, adding that judicial authorities will also carry out prosecutions against those who have caused damage to property, without giving further details, according to Mehr Agency.

Last November 13, a revolutionary court in Tehran sentenced to death a detainee for burning a government headquarters in what was the first sentence of this caliber since the beginning of the demonstrations that erupted after the death of the young woman.

The Iranian NGO HRANA estimates that more than 18,000 people have been taken into police custody, temporarily or so far, since the outbreak of the protests in the country, which have cost the lives of more than 400 people.
