Around 160 people have been rescued in two operations carried out by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in the central Mediterranean, one of the main routes used by migrants trying to reach European shores from North Africa.

MSF has indicated that 90 people, including 35 minors, have been rescued in an inflatable boat that was going through problems «in international waters near Libya.» «All are safe on board the ‘Geo Barents’ and are receiving care from the team,» it said through its account on the social network Twitter.

Thus, it has detailed that the boat has been located in the area and that rescue operations «began immediately», just hours after indicating that 74 people, «including many women and minors» were rescued in the central Mediterranean after leaving Libyan shores in an inflatable boat.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports on its website that so far this year more than 1,960 people have died or have been reported missing while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach European shores, a figure that in 2021 amounted to 2,062, above the data for 2020 and 2019.
