The Government of Spain has reiterated its condemnation of the execution of the second prisoner in Iran to be officially sentenced for an alleged crime stemming from protests organized in different parts of the country since the death in police custody of the young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini.

«We reiterate our strong condemnation of a new execution in Iran in the context of protests. Spain opposes the death penalty in all countries and circumstances,» the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed in a message posted on the social network Twitter, in which they have also claimed that «the repression of peaceful demonstrations and violations of Human Rights must cease» in Iran.

The prisoner, identified as Majidreza Rahnavard, was sentenced to death for allegedly killing two members of the security forces and wounding four others with a knife at the end of November.

Late last week, Iran announced that it had executed the first prisoner, identified as Mohsen Shekari, convicted of «intentionally» injuring a security guard with a long knife and blocking a street in the capital.

Likewise, the Spanish Embassy in Iran has been closely following for weeks the cases of the two Spaniards detained by the Iranian authorities and has been keeping the families of both of them informed, according to diplomatic sources told Europa Press.
