Spain, together with Italy and France, launches initiatives with African countries to prevent illegal migration

The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has signed this Monday the launching of joint initiatives with Italy and France with African countries to prevent illegal migration.

The agreements in the framework of ‘Team Europe’, the cooperation format of the European Commission and Member States, have been signed this Monday in Brussels with Mauritania, Niger and Nigeria, with the aim of improving cooperation to address the roots of migration and prevent the use of illegal migration routes to reach Europe.

«The main objectives are very simple: we work together to strengthen resilience, support economic growth, new jobs and a future for young people in their country of origin, while cooperating to tackle irregular migration,» said Neighborhood Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi during the launch event of the initiatives.

In the case of the Western Mediterranean route, Brussels and the Member States have already mobilized 908 million euros to support cooperation with Algeria, Mauritania, Morocco, Senegal, Gambia, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger and Nigeria. In the case of Spain, Varhelyi detailed that 150 million for border management.

Brussels has mobilized more than 580 million euros in North Africa and has allocated 3.3 billion euros in aid mobilized 5.7 billion euros in investments in the region to address the root causes of migration.
