Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Monday mocked the European Parliament on social networks following investigations into an alleged corruption scheme, recalling the same body’s criticism of Hungary’s anti-democratic drift.

«Good morning to the European Parliament,» Orbán wrote on his Twitter account, next to a photograph showing former leaders allegedly laughing that the chamber is «seriously concerned about corruption in Hungary.»

The European Parliament has on several occasions taken a stand against the Orbán government. In September, it denounced in a report that Hungary is a «hybrid regime of autocracy» in which elections are held but democratic standards are not respected.

Orbán, who spares no criticism against European institutions that question his policies, has this time returned the reproaches by taking advantage of the arrest of several people for an alleged Qatar bribery scheme. Among the suspects is the vice-president of the European Parliament Eva Kaili.
