Frenchman Fred Vasseur, until now team manager of Alfa Romeo, will be the new general manager and director of the Ferrari Formula 1 team, replacing Mattia Binotto, the ‘Scuderia’ confirmed Tuesday.

Vasseur, who will take up his new position on January 9, has more than 25 years of experience in the world of motorsport, from junior formulae to Formula 1, where he has worked for the last decade. During his time in the GP2 Series, he helped Nico Rosberg (2005) and Lewis Hamilton (2006) to become champions.

Since 2017, the Frenchman held the position of managing director and team principal of Sauber Motorsport, now Alfa Romeo F1 Team, and before that, in 2016, he was team principal of Renault F1 Team.

«I am truly delighted and proud to take on the leadership of Ferrari as Team Principal. As someone who has always had a passion for motorsport, Ferrari has always represented the pinnacle of the racing world. I look forward to working with the talented and passionate team at Maranello to honor the history and legacy of the ‘Scuderia’ and bring joy to our ‘tifosi’ around the world,» Vasseur said.

For his part, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna acknowledged that they are «delighted» with the arrival of the Gallic leader. «Throughout his career, he has successfully combined his technical strengths as a skilled engineer with a consistent ability to bring out the best in his drivers and teams. This approach and his leadership are what we need to drive Ferrari forward with renewed energy,» he finished.

On November 29, Italian Mattia Binotto resigned as Ferrari’s team boss, a «wise move» despite it being a «tough moment» after 28 years with the ‘Prancing Horse’.
