The European Union is waiting for the investigation opened by the Belgian judiciary into alleged Qatari bribes to MEPs to produce «proven facts» before considering whether to take diplomatic measures such as summoning the Qatari ambassador to the EU bloc.

«If the question is whether we have summoned the Qatari ambassador the answer is ‘no’,» said the spokesman for the European External Action Service (EEAS), Peter Stano, to questions from journalists in Brussels, after specifying that the Belgian justice points in its official communications on the open case for corruption and criminal organization to a «Gulf country» that does not identify.

From the European Parliament, where one of its vice-presidents -now dismissed–, Eva Kaili, has been charged for accepting bribes, has pointed directly to Qatar both during a debate held on Tuesday and in the resolution that is being finalized to request that the representatives of this country do not have access to the European Parliament.

«The investigations are ongoing, they are under the domain of Belgian Justice, we wait to see what are the results, the confirmed facts,» reasoned Stano, who added that «if there are facts, we will react accordingly.»
