Peru’s Ombudsman corrects death toll to six during social protests

The Peruvian Ombudsman has clarified that there are six fatalities in the framework of the social protests demanding the dissolution of Dina Boluarte’s government and the release of Pedro Castillo, after the head of the entity, Eliana Revollar, mentioned that there were seven deaths.

«The Ombudsman’s Office wishes to inform the citizens that there are six and not seven people dead in the context of the protests that are taking place in the country», reads a communiqué.

Thus, the entity has indicated that the information it initially collected «is not accurate»: «The alleged deceased, named Jonathan Lloclla Loayza, according to information from the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec), does not exist,» it said.

In this way, the Ombudsman has clarified that the deceased are six people, of which two are minors (15 and 16 years old), three others were 18 years old and the last one was 38 years old.

«We regret the death of the citizens, including two teenagers, and urge the cessation of violence,» the missive continues.

The country’s Minister of Health, Rosa Gutierrez, reported this correction hours earlier: «I want to specify that there are six dead as of today’s cut-off. It is true that we have wounded in the different points, but they are being resolved, they are being attended in a timely manner», she explained, according to the Peruvian newspaper ‘La República’.
