The Colombian Senate approved early this morning a progressive ban on cruel animal entertainment practices, directly targeting bullfighting but leaving out other practices such as cockfighting.

The bill approved by the Senate states that, gradually during the next three years, the entrepreneurs of this type of activities will have to look for alternatives to their economic income, according to local radio station RCN Radio.

Among the modifications that the proposal has undergone, it is worth mentioning that cockfighting will be left out of the prohibition, while conditions will be studied to avoid animal mistreatment in the corralejas, something similar to the capeas in Spain.

«The Senate makes history», celebrated the senator of Alianza Verde Andrea Padilla, promoter of the proposal and who has shown her gratitude to the flocks that support the Government, and also to the opposition Cambio Radical, which has joined the measure.

Likewise, Padilla has also shown her gratitude in social networks to the president of the country, Gustavo Petro; to the president of the Senate, Roy Barreras; and to the Colombian Minister of the Interior, Alfonso Prada.

The bill has gone ahead not without uncertainty, as during the session there was even the possibility of a quorum breakup, as at least 30 senators left the room. This led Barreras to extend the session so that finally the vote could count with the presence of all the necessary parliamentarians.

In order for the proposal of the Alianza Verde senator to finally become part of Colombian legislation, it will have to be debated up to two times in the Chamber, according to the newspaper El Tiempo.
