The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has expressed his «deep sadness» at the death toll reported by the Congolese authorities as a result of the rainstorm in the country, which has left more than 120 people dead.

Guterres’ spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, has indicated that the United Nations expresses its solidarity with the Democratic Republic of Congo, while extending its condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the Government of the country.

«These floods have destroyed homes and farmland, as well as schools and other public infrastructure,» Dujarric has lamented, who has regretted «the serious damage in Kinshasa and some provinces» by the floods, «the worst to hit the country since 2019.»

The DRC authorities decreed three days of national mourning for the death of at least 120 people due to heavy rains in the capital, Kinshasa, which have caused floods and landslides in the city.

«The head of state, who is following the evolution of the situation every hour, has ordered the government, under the mandate of Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, to take charge of the situation of the victims of the floods,» said the Congolese presidency, while the president, Felix Tshisekedi, was in the United States for an international summit.
