The former foreign minister and current Venezuelan ambassador to Colombia, Félix Plasencia, will be the new secretary general of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), which will force Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to fill the vacancy again in Bogotá.
Plasencia delivered his credentials in the Colombian capital in early September, in the framework of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Bogota and Caracas following the arrival of President Gustavo Petro.
Maduro announced on his Twitter account that Plasencia will now be the new secretary of ALBA, the regional bloc once promoted by Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez and Cuba’s Fidel Castro to strengthen relations between allied governments in the Latin American region.
The Venezuelan President has applauded the «impeccable role» that Plasencia has played in every task entrusted to him. «I am sure he will continue to advance in the objective of uniting our peoples. Success!» he said at the end of the meeting of leaders of the bloc in Cuba.
