The head of the Joint Command of the Peruvian Armed Forces, Manuel Gómez de la Torre, has assured this Saturday that normality is gradually returning to Peru after the recent riots between demonstrators and security forces that have resulted in some twenty deaths.
«We have been gradually recovering normalcy on the roads, in the airports, in the cities. Normality is returning, it is not yet achieved; however, let’s be positive», explained Gómez in a press conference held at the Government Palace of Peru and reported by the Andina news agency.
Gómez has denounced that members of the Armed Forces and the National Police have suffered attacks by people who are completely wrong in their claims. «We have stood firm,» he stressed.
The head of the Armed Forces has stressed that their mission during the state of national emergency decreed by the Government has been to safeguard critical assets attacked by groups that are committing «terrorist» actions.
«You cannot destroy premises of the Prosecutor’s Office, of the Judiciary. You cannot limit the capacity of the airports, how are citizens going to move? We need to have free communication routes. In the face of the illegal misuse of violence, the State has the Armed Forces and the Police, as it should. Let us go out to protect Peru», he argued.
Gómez also welcomed the initiative of thousands of citizens who, in the face of the acts of violence, have organized marches with white polo shirts, in a peaceful manner, to demand peace and the end of violence in the country.
