The European Commission has published this Sunday a statement on the occasion of the celebration of International Migrants Day in which it defends the need for «safe, orderly, legal and well-managed» immigration.
«Every year between two and three million people from all over the world come legally to the EU to work or study. Meanwhile, every year thousands more try to reach the EU through irregular and unsafe routes via deadly routes. Since 2014, more than 50,000 migrants have lost their lives on migration routes around the world,» Brussels recalled in its statement.
The Commission has recognized the aspirations for a better job or the right to flee conflicts, persecution or environmental degradation, but has stressed the «need» for it to be a «safe, legal and well-managed» migration.
«Safe and legal pathways allow the European Union to unleash the immense potential of human mobility. It is an investment in our economy and our society as a whole and supports key EU areas such as the green and digital transition and contribute to making Europe more competitive, cohesive and resilient,» the Commission has stressed in a statement also signed by the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.
Brussels thus stresses that legal migration channels have economic advantages in reducing unsafe migration and the human and economic costs linked to human trafficking.
Thus, the Commission is working to «create new channels for legal migration» and to establish «mutually beneficial» Talent Partnership programs with countries of origin such as Tunisia, Morocco or Egypt.
