Iranian Minister of Information and Communication Technology Issa Zarepur announced Sunday that Iran will launch at least two satellites within three months using rockets that could carry nuclear weapons and whose use is prohibited by UN Security Council resolutions.
The rockets will launch Nahid 1 and Nahid 2 satellites into orbit before the end of the Persian year, on March 20, 2023, Zarepur said in statements carried by the official Iranian news agency IRNA. Zarepur has indicated that other satellite launches are already in preparation, the specific schedule of which will be announced in the future.
Nahid 1 is a low-orbit communications microsatellite that was unveiled in February 2016 by the Space Transportation Systems Institute, a subsidiary of the Iranian Space Agency.
Nahid 2 is a communications satellite equipped with a boost engine that enables it to perform orbit changes and is considered a milestone in the development of Iranian space technology.
The United States and its allies have previously charged that Iranian satellite launches are actually tests of ballistic missiles, projectiles that could carry nuclear weapons. Tehran has denied that this is its intention.
