Peruvian authorities updated Saturday afternoon the total death toll following the demonstrations that erupted in Peru after the impeachment and arrest of former president Pedro Castillo, bringing the total number of people killed to 23.
The Regional Health Directorate of Lima Province (Diresa) has announced the death of one more person as a result of the clashes at the Ayacucho airport between the demonstrators, who were trying to take over the airport, and the Peruvian Armed Forces.
«It is reported that, despite all the efforts of health personnel and doctors at the Ayacucho Regional Hospital, one of the wounded died in the early hours of this morning,» Diresa said in a statement, as reported by RPP radio station.
Thus, the total number of deaths in Peru has increased to 23, of which 14 have taken place after the declaration of emergency decreed by the Peruvian Government last Thursday.
The latest deaths come in the midst of strong protests taking place across Peru following the impeachment and arrest of former President Castillo on December 7. Protesters are calling on President Dina Boluarte to dissolve Congress and call for new general elections.
The Peruvian government has decreed a national state of emergency for a period of 30 days in response to the protests in support of Castillo. Likewise, the Executive has declared an emergency in the National Road Network, allowing the Army to take to the streets in an effort to protect the strategic points of the country.
