Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Saturday called Moldova’s decision to suspend six TV channels with Russian-language content and programs «an act of censorship».
After the Chisinau government’s Commission for Exceptional Situations on Friday approved the suspension, during the state of emergency, of the broadcasting licenses of six television stations in the country, Russia has shown its rejection of the measure.
«We regard this ban as an unprecedented act of political censorship, as a violation of the principle of media pluralism and a flagrant violation of the right to freedom of access to information, the commitment to which the political leadership of the republic regularly reaffirms,» the spokeswoman said in a statement carried by TASS.
Zakharova also said that Russia sees the decision as «a cynical violation of the rights of national minorities» in Moldova.
«We demand that the relevant international organizations give a proper assessment of this move and take any possible measures to rectify this unacceptable situation,» the Russian diplomacy spokeswoman added.
