Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian warned on Monday of the collapse of health services in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh due to the blockade imposed by Azerbaijan on the area a week ago.
«The Lachin corridor has been blocked for eight days by Azerbaijan and the Armenian people are stranded on roads in the open and cold. Entire families have been separated. Citizens with serious health problems find it difficult to access medical services,» he has warned in a message disseminated through his Twitter account.
Residents of Stepanakert, the capital of the region, have reported that some services are still available, although most operations have had to be suspended.
On Monday, Azeri activists rallied in the area to protest against an alleged violation of environmental protection laws by the mining sector. However, Armenian authorities have accused them of being agents of Azeri intelligence.
Since then, Yerevan has been working on an attempt to gain international support to exert the necessary pressure on Baku to end the blockade in the area, where Russian peacekeepers are deployed to ensure compliance with the agreements between the parties.
