Russian authorities have reopened to traffic the Kerch Bridge, infrastructure connecting the Crimean peninsula to mainland Russia and the scene of a fierce explosion in early October in the context of the war with Ukraine.
The Russian Ministry of Transport has confirmed it through a statement in which they detail that the bridge was closed to traffic due to «repair and restoration works», as reported by the TASS news agency.
The structure was severely damaged last October 8 by the explosion of a truck. That partial destruction of the Kerch bridge was one of the most symbolic blows against Russia since the beginning of its military offensive in February.
Russian authorities initially blamed Ukrainian intelligence for the attack and confirmed several arrests in the framework of an investigation for alleged terrorism.
Already in early December, Russian President Vladimir Putin toured the bridge in a car accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Jusnulin to confirm the good progress of the repair of an infrastructure of special symbolism for Moscow.
Inaugurated by Putin in 2018, it is one of the most important infrastructure works on the peninsula since its annexation in 2014 and a symbolic and practical example of the connection of this territory to Russia. The 19-kilometer-long structure comprises a rail transport track and a highway.
