The protests taking place throughout Peru following the impeachment and arrest of former president Pedro Castillo on December 7 have so far left 26 people dead, according to the latest report by Peruvian authorities.

A miner has lost his life in the Arequipa region, in the south of the country, as a result of clashes at the Ayacucho airport between protesters and security forces, all this while the protesters were trying to take over the terminal, ‘Diario Correo’ has reported.

The deceased was rushed with serious injuries to the EsSalud Hospital in Chala, although by then he arrived without vital signs.

At least six people have also been reported injured and it is presumed that the number of dead could increase in the coming hours, according to the newspaper.

Thus, the total death toll in Peru has risen to 26, of which 17 have occurred after the declaration of emergency decreed by the Peruvian government last Thursday.

The latest deaths take place in the midst of the strong protests that are taking place throughout Peru following the impeachment and arrest of former President Castillo on December 7. Protesters are calling on President Dina Boluarte to dissolve Congress and call for new general elections.

The Peruvian government has decreed a national state of emergency for a period of 30 days in response to the protests in support of Castillo. Likewise, the Executive has declared an emergency in the National Road Network, allowing the Army to take to the streets in an effort to protect the strategic points of the country.
