Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has implored the international community to continue to help the country recover from the floods that have devastated the country.

«We are in this incredibly difficult position where we are trying to manage our macroeconomic indicators with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and provide the imminent relief for the people that is still needed now in Pakistan, and plan for reconstruction and rehabilitation,» the Pakistani foreign minister said in an interview with Bloomberg.

Zardari lamented that since the international media cameras left the country, «the attention has disappeared,» despite the fact that «flooding is still going on in many areas» of the country.

«Right now, our number one priority has to help these people who are in dire need in the short, medium and long term,» he said after calling on the government to engage in dialogue with international financial institutions to improve the national economy.

The floods recorded in the Asian country in summer killed more than 1,700 people and flooded a third of the country. The damage amounted to US$ 32 billion for the country’s economy.

All in all, Pakistan is facing an economic crisis exacerbated by the delay of its loan program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
