Ukraine’s First Deputy Interior Minister Yevheni Yenin has confirmed that the country’s authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the explosion of a gift given to the commander-in-chief of the Polish National Police, Jaroslaw Szymczyk, after a visit to Kiev.
«The relevant criminal proceedings have been initiated, as part of which a pre-trial investigation is being conducted. Interrogations are being conducted,» Yenin detailed in statements to the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform.
Yenin detailed that the Ukrainian authorities are in contact with the Polish side to «ensure the objectivity of the investigation and learn appropriate lessons so that similar incidents never occur.»
On the other hand, Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski has reported on his Twitter profile that the Ukrainian authorities have dismissed Dimitro Bondar as head of the Emergency Situations Service Headquarters, pointing to him as responsible for the gift to Szymczyk.
Already on Monday Kaminski announced that Ukrainian Interior Minister Denis Monastirski was planning to travel to Poland to learn first-hand what happened last week, when the gift delivered by the Ukrainian authorities exploded on the premises of the Polish Police Headquarters, injuring three people, including Szymczyk.
Szymczyk himself has reported in an interview to the daily ‘Rzeczpospolita’ that the gift he received from Ukraine was two anti-tank grenade launchers. Ukraine has indicated that the explosion at the Police Headquarters occurred after Polish officers tampered with the grenade launcher.
