The director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, continued on Thursday in Russia his round of contacts to request guarantees for Ukraine’s nuclear facilities, insisting on the need to impose a safety zone at the Zaporiyia power plant to «prevent a nuclear accident».
«It is key that the zone is focused only on preventing a nuclear accident. I will continue my efforts to achieve this goal with utmost urgency,» Grossi warned on his Twitter account, alongside an image giving an account of his latest contacts in Moscow.
Grossi has met with the head of the state corporation Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev, in a meeting that the Russian side has described as «substantial, useful and frank,» according to the TASS news agency. According to Rosatom, the Russian authorities and Grossi have brought positions closer on the Zaporiyia power plant, considered the largest in Europe.
The IAEA has on numerous occasions expressed its fear that Ukraine’s atomic facilities could suffer some kind of accident due to the fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces, with particular concern in the case of the Zaporiyia plant, controlled by Russia since the beginning of March. This plant has suffered temporary disconnections from the power grid as a result of the attacks.
