Germany’s Public Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday reported the arrest of a German citizen employed by the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) on charges of having acted as a possible double agent for Russia.
According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in a statement, the German citizen was arrested on Wednesday in Berlin by agents of the Criminal Police and searched the apartment and workplace of both the suspect and another person of whom no further details have been disclosed.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the detainee is «strongly suspected» of the crime of treason after he had handed over confidential German intelligence information to a Russian service during the course of this year.
The Federal Court of Justice has examined the case and has concluded to order the suspect’s arrest and to remand him in custody.
