The Kyrgyz Parliament on Thursday approved an amendment to the law on guarantees for former presidents that deprives former leaders of the right to use official real estate after leaving office.

The deputies have approved the measure, which will force the former presidents to stop using these residences, including the ‘dachas’ – summer houses – one month after they have proceeded to the transfer of power, according to a statement from the Parliament itself.

The former presidents will also not be able to make use of the Presidency’s communication services, issues that the former heads of state were guaranteed for life until now.

The new legislation also allows former presidents to use state security services, as long as they are paid for by themselves, as well as to reside in official housing if they pay for their use with their own funds.

Until now, the law offered former presidents the right to public transportation, state protection, residence and medical care for life, in addition to 75 percent of the salary received when they were heads of state.
