The leader of the self-proclaimed Luganks People’s Republic, Leonid Pasechnik, on Thursday presented a draft for a new constitution for the region, controlled by pro-Russian authorities and annexed by the Kremlin in September.
According to Denis Miroshnichenko, chairman of the Lugansk pro-Russian Parliament, this new Magna Carta could be approved next week, before the end of the year, reports TASS news agency.
«The Constitution has already been submitted to the People’s Council (…), it is already in the corresponding committee and is going through all the legal procedures it must go through,» Miroshnichenko explained.
The president of the Legislative has recognized that the approval of a new Magna Carta has been delayed because «it is not an ordinary law that can be quickly considered», although he has stressed that finally it will be able to receive the ‘green light’ soon because now «there are no obstacles».
Lugansk, in eastern Ukraine, was annexed by Russia at the end of September together with the regions of Donetsk, Zaporiyia and Kherson after the holding of accession referendums in which the ‘yes’ vote won by an overwhelming majority.
The international community, for its part, has never recognized these results and has defended the position that the votes were illegal.
