Russia’s emergency services confirmed Thursday a fire aboard the aircraft carrier ‘Admiral Kuznetsov’, moored in a port in the town of Murmansk, on the Kola Peninsula in the far northwest of the country.
According to emergency services sources told the TASS news agency, no casualties were reported as a result of the fire, although about twenty people had to be evacuated.
The company in charge of the ship’s repair work, United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), has confirmed that the flames, which originated in the port cabins, have already been extinguished. «The damage control system worked quickly: there was no damage,» said USC chief Alexei Rakhmanov.
The ‘Admiral Kuznetsov’ was driven to the Zvyozdochka shipyard last May and repair and modernization work on the ship began in June.
The ship already suffered a fire in 2019 as a result of which two people died and 14 others were injured, German agency DPA reports.
