Russian authorities have claimed that their peacekeepers deployed in the disputed region of Nagorno Karabakh are «doing everything possible» to ensure order in the area despite accusations by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who has been critical of the actions of Russian-deployed troops.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has indicated that the Russian contingent is «acting in accordance with the trilateral agreements reached» between the parties to try to «ensure order».
«Russian peacekeepers are doing everything possible to ensure tranquility in the territories where they are working and are acting solemnly in accordance with the spirit embodied by the documents signed» by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia.
Thus, he indicated that «we will continue to discuss this issue with our Armenian colleagues and our allies», as reported by the Interfax news agency. His words come hours after Pashinian questioned the work of the Russian forces in connection with the blockade in force in the area and imposed by Azerbaijan in the Lachin corridor.
«This is happening as a result of Azerbaijan’s illegal actions, but this does not change because the task of the Russian peacekeeping contingent is not to allow these illegalities to pass and, in particular, to keep the Lachin corridor under control,» he said.
Therefore, Pashinian has accused the Russian troops of «not fully fulfilling their obligations to control the corridor.» «Even if Azerbaijan is to blame, it does not change what is happening,» he pointed out.
