South Korean authorities on Thursday released a high-resolution image taken by one of their satellites showing the city of Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, a move taken in response to the North Korean authorities’ release of a black-and-white photograph of Seoul, the South Korean capital.
The photograph, in color, clearly shows Pyongyang’s main squares, buildings and museums and was released after North Korean authorities claimed to have used a military spy satellite to produce the black-and-white image.
Just this week, the North Korean news agency KCNA claimed that the camera installed on the «test satellite» built for military reconnaissance purposes had a high resolution.
However, several experts have questioned the North Korean version and, after analyzing the image, have pointed out that the equipment used by North Korea would not be in line with what is necessary to achieve its purpose in terms of military reconnaissance.
Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, on Tuesday criticized doubts about the viability of the country’s nuclear program and its spy satellite after announcing the launch of a series of tests to put the military reconnaissance device into orbit for next year.
«Those who call themselves experts see so many faults in others that they cannot but utter words that are utterly meaningless,» the North Korean leader’s sister said at the time, referring to criticism from the international community, which claims that these so-called advances are false.
