Authorities in Iran on Thursday executed three people convicted of rape and robbery in a prison in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz, amid an upsurge in the application of capital punishment in the Central Asian country.
The head of the judiciary in Fars province, Kazem Mousavi, said that the three executed had been convicted in July and added that the sentences were later ratified, according to the Iranian news agency Tasnim.
He indicated that they were all found guilty of armed robbery and rape of several women in Shiraz and added that the victims of these «violent and inhuman acts» suffered «severe mental and emotional damage» as a result of the aggression.
Mousavi pointed out that the sentencing and execution of these individuals is in line with the defense of the rights of the population, «especially women», and stressed that the judicial apparatus will act «decisively» against the «criminals».
Several NGOs have denounced that the number of executions in Iran has increased since the arrival of Ebrahim Raisi to the Iranian Presidency in 2021. Amnesty International reported that 250 people were executed during the first half of 2022, mainly on drug-related charges.
In addition, Iranian authorities have executed two people, including one in public, for their role in the protests sparked in September by the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish woman arrested in the capital, Tehran, for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly.
