The U.S. Senate on Thursday authorized the transfer to Kiev of assets seized from Russian oligarchs under sanctions imposed in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

The Upper House of the US Capitol has approved an amendment to the government funding bill and proposed by the Republican senator for the state of South Carolina Lindsey Graham, CNN reports.

«This amendment would allow the Department of Justice, through the Secretary of State, to transfer the proceeds of seized assets of the oligarchs, or other sanctioned entities, to the people of Ukraine,» Graham has defended.

For Graham, this news will be for the people of Ukraine as «a gift from God», while for the American taxpayer it will be quite a «relief». «It will be a bad day for the oligarchs,» the Republican senator concluded, alluding to the Russian tycoons.

The Administration of U.S. President Joe Biden has announced on successive occasions sanctions packages against Russian oligarchs for their affinity to the head of state of Russia, Vladimir Putin, or for their collaboration in the war in Ukraine.

«These individuals have enriched themselves at the expense of the Russian people and some have propelled their family members into office,» while others «are responsible for providing the resources necessary to support the invasion of Ukraine,» the White House argued in one of its first battery of sanctions.
