Brazilian Congress agrees to increase minimum wage by 9% by 2023

Session of the Brazilian Congress in the Plenary of the Chamber of Deputies – AGÊNCIA CÂMARA DE NOTÍCIAS

Brazil’s Congress on Thursday approved the 2023 Budget bill that includes a provision for a nine percent increase in the minimum wage, which will rise to 1,320 reais (240 euros).

This readjustment of the minimum wage implies that Brazilians who collect it will go on to earn 18 euros more per month, since it was previously at 1,221. In addition, the final amount is higher than the one that outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro wanted to carry out, which was at 1,302 reais, as advanced by the Brazilian Parliament in a statement.

The text approved by the Parliament — which is fragmenting and in which the Government does not have a majority — also guarantees for 2023 the payment of 600 reais (109 euros) of Bolsa Familia — a family aid program — as well as an additional 150 reais (27 euros) for families with children up to six years old.

These accounts also foresee an allocation of at least 2.27 billion reais (414 million euros) extra for the Ministry of Health, as well as 1.5 billion reais (221 million euros) in gas subsidies, which would return to cover 50 percent of its price as of January 2023, as reported by the G1 channel.

Now, the 2023 Budgets must be signed by Bolsonaro who, however, could veto passages, including the new minimum wage increase. In this case, Congress would analyze these vetoes in the next legislature, which begins in January.
