China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Friday sanctions against two U.S. citizens in response to restrictions imposed by Washington on the Asian country for alleged human rights abuses in the Tibet region.
The two affected are academic Yu Maochun, known as Miles Yu in the U.S., and member of the U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China Todd Stein.
According to the Asian media ‘Global Times’, the United States announced sanctions against two Chinese officials for alleged human rights abuses committed in Tibet, actions considered illegal by China as well as a serious damage in the relations between both powers.
In response, China will confiscate all assets owned by the two citizens in China, prohibit any relationship of organizations or individuals within China with them, and bar them and their immediate family members from entering the country.
As stated by the aforementioned media, Yu Maochun would have played a relevant role in the tensions between Washington and China, while Stein would be the Director of Government Relations of the International Campaign for Tibet, having promoted legislative projects against Chinese interests.
This is not the first time China has sanctioned U.S. citizens. In August 2022, the authorities announced measures against U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her family members due to the leader’s «interference» in the country’s «internal affairs» by visiting Taiwan despite warnings.
