The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, José Manuel Albares, has held a telephone conversation this Thursday with his Iranian counterpart, Hosein Amirabdolahian, who has conveyed his displeasure at the «bad action of the West» in canceling Iran’s membership in the Commission on the Status of Women.
The head of diplomacy in Iran has criticized the measure, while considering this action as «an attempt to destroy the opportunity for dialogue», according to Irna news agency.
Likewise, Amirabdolahian expressed that «Iran has one of the strongest democracies» in the region, for which he considers that «it is not acceptable that Europe sees the problems in a unilateral way and continues to interfere».
For his part, Albares commented that the Spanish government «will make efforts» to continue with the negotiations and develop ties» with Teheran.
The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) approved last Wednesday to cancel Iran’s membership in the Commission on the Status of Women in response to the repression of protests and the worsening of the defense of women’s human rights in the country.
The decision, presented by the U.S. delegation, was approved with 12 votes in favor, 26 against — from countries such as China, Russia or Nicaragua — and 11 abstentions.
The Iranian representation pointed out that this decision undermines the principles of the UN Charter, after showing its rejection of the resolution, alleging that «it is based on fictitious allegations against the Islamic Republic of Iran».
