Russian authorities confirmed Saturday the arrest of a resident of Lugansk, eastern Ukraine, accused of serving for the far-right Azov Battalion and planning attacks in the region, annexed by Moscow in late September.
Sources close to Russia’s special services confirmed to the TASS news agency that the detainee had allegedly gathered information on the location of Russian troops and other confidential matters concerning the pro-Russian administration in Lugansk.
The same sources said that during the arrest operation, the Russian authorities found a homemade explosive device, destroyed on the spot, made of «metal submunitions» and remote control.
Already on Friday, the authorities of the self-proclaimed Lugansk People’s Republic, recognized by the Kremlin, reported that Russian special services had discovered at least two ammunition caches.
According to Lugansk, the Ukrainian side planned to use these explosives to carry out terrorist attacks in the framework of the New Year holidays in the region.
