Sri Lanka’s former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and several of his family members boarded a plane for the United States on Monday, nearly two months after the Supreme Court approved the opening of a case against him over the country’s economic crisis.
Airport sources quoted by the Sri Lankan newspaper ‘Daily Mirror’ have indicated that Rajapaksa’s wife, Ioma, his daughter-in-law, his son Manoj and one of his grandchildren are traveling with him, but no further details have been revealed so far.
Rajapaksa was forced out of office in June amid massive protests against his government. He and former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, all from the same family, have been accused of irregularities.
The appointment of Ranil Wickremesinghe as the new president has not completely calmed the population, which considers it a «patch» to what is already the biggest crisis facing the country since it gained independence from the United Kingdom.
