Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has denounced on Monday the conditions of his arrest at the Melekhovo Penal Colony 6, where he has been held in solitary confinement for several months.
Navalni has launched a message on his social networks where he has recounted that in his cell he can barely stand or sit on an «iron stool». «Even a healthy person’s back hurts in these conditions,» he has denounced.
The opposition leader has reported that he suffers from back pain but that, nevertheless, the medical team of the penitentiary center has not wanted to communicate the diagnosis after several consultations and despite his insistence to know the medical assessment.
Navalni, who has been prescribed injections to alleviate the pain, has reported that these medications have not worked, so he has asked for a copy of his medical records, but has only received an illegible document.
The prominent opposition figure is being held in Melekhovo Penal Colony 6, some 260 kilometers northeast of the Russian capital, Moscow, in particularly harsh prison conditions.
Navalni was imprisoned in January 2021, when he returned to Moscow from Berlin, where he had been recovering from a poisoning that he and Western governments attributed to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s security service. The Kremlin denies any responsibility.
The oppositionist was imprisoned for having violated the rules of conduct imposed in the probation file in the framework of the Yves Rocher case, for which he was sentenced in 2014 for corruption.
