The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has called on UN member states to expel Russia from both the Security Council and the other bodies that make up the United Nations.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has submitted a document urging the application of the UN Charter to «deprive the Russian Federation of its status as a permanent member of the Security Council» and exclude it from the UN «as a whole».
«From the point of view of international law, the question of the status of the UN member state and permanent member of the UN Security Council, which the Russian Federation enjoys, remains unresolved,» they have transferred from Kiev.
Thus, the diplomatic portfolio pointed out that, with the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991, there were issues related to the international rights and obligations of the USSR that remained unresolved, Ukrinform reports.
«The Russian Federation took the seat of a permanent member of the UN Security Council without going through the procedures defined by the UN Charter,» the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.
Therefore, Kiev has defended to be in a position to fight for achieving the goals of the UN Charter and to cooperate with other countries to jointly protect the body and limit Russia’s veto right.
«We assume that the expulsion of the Russian Federation from the UN Security Council will not have a retroactive effect on the previous decisions of this body,» Ukrainian diplomatic representatives have acknowledged to the above-mentioned agency.
