The Belarusian government on Tuesday announced the cancellation of the agreement on additional security measures with Ukraine, which «allowed to control military activities at a depth of 80 kilometers» from the border, in the midst of the Russian invasion, unleashed on February 24 on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Valeri Revenko, Deputy Minister of Defense for International Military Cooperation, said on his account on the social network Twitter that the measure has been approved «by decree of the Council of Ministers», without giving further details. Ukraine has not commented on the decision for now.
Hours earlier, the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, had affirmed that during his last meeting with his Russian counterpart «many points were dotted on the i’s» and said that the governments of both countries will work to implement the agreements reached.
Putin traveled last week to Belarus to meet with the Belarusian president, who said after the meeting that Moscow and Minsk are ready to dialogue with Europe, to which he has appealed to «listen to the voice of reason». Belarus, an ally of Moscow, has allowed the deployment of military personnel on its territory to support the offensive.
The Russian president ordered the start of the invasion of Ukraine days after recognizing the independence of the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, located in the Donbas region (east) and the scene of a conflict since 2014. Moscow announced in September the annexation of these regions and those of Kherson and Zaporiyia, partially occupied in the framework of the conflict.
