North Korean officials stressed Tuesday that they have put an end to «the tyranny of imperialism» and «nuclear blackmail» by the United States by achieving the development of its nuclear program, amid a spike in tensions on the peninsula over Pyongyang’s latest ballistic tests and the intrusion of several drones Monday across the border with South Korea.

«Our party has completed the process of obtaining a national nuclear force as the main issue in building a powerful country. It has succeeded brilliantly, achieving a miraculous victory that puts an end forever to the history of unilateral nuclear blackmail by the U.S.,» said Supreme People’s Assembly Chairman Choe Ryong Hae, as reported by ‘Rodong Sinmun’ newspaper.

He extolled that North Korea «has rapidly emerged as a world-class military power both on paper and in reality and ushered in an era of the ‘state first’ principle», while noting that Pyongyang «has adopted a new line of development while strengthening military deterrence».

«It is the most phenomenal achievement in the development of our state, which has prepared conditions and environment for the victory of socialism in our way by promoting the building of a self-reliant defense force under firm legal guarantees,» he stressed, before reiterating that this «is a historic event at the national level that lays the foundation for national prosperity.»

Choe also applauded the importance of establishing North Korea’s status as a nuclear power in the Constitution, something that took place in September, while arguing that «it was a milestone that makes it possible to strengthen the country’s deterrence capability».

Choe’s words came during a speech on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the approval of the North Korean Constitution, an event in which North Korean leader Kim Jong Un participated, according to the newspaper, which for the moment has not reported whether Kim himself has made statements during the event.
