
The military authorities of Ecuador and Colombia signed an agreement on Wednesday to implement a plan to curb drug trafficking along the almost 600 kilometers of shared border.
The top military commanders of both countries held a bilateral meeting in Ipiales, Colombia, on Wednesday to sign the agreement on the Border Protection Plan.
«The meeting addressed issues to curb the actions of drug trafficking and organized crime on the common border implemented in the Border Protection Plan arranged by the presidents of Ecuador and Colombia, Guillermo Lasso and Gustavo Petro,» the Armed Forces of Ecuador have shared in a message via Twitter.
On behalf of the Ecuadorian Army, Major General Nelson Proaño Rodríguez, Chief of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces of Ecuador, presided over the meeting.
On the other hand, General Helder Fernán Giraldo Bonilla, General Commander of the Armed Forces of Colombia participated on behalf of Colombia.
The joint work between the two countries will allow the exchange of information and the coordination of operations, especially in those areas considered to be at high risk due to clashes between armed groups, as reported by the Ecuadorian newspaper ‘Primicias’.
