The Russian government on Thursday branded Ukraine’s proposal to hold a peace summit in early 2023 as a «crazy idea» and charged the U.S. role in the war because of its support for the «Kiev regime.»
«We are talking about meeting at the UN headquarters on February 24, the anniversary of the start of the special military operation, for a kind of ‘peace summit’ which, according to the plan of the leaders in Kiev, should help implement the strange inventions of (Ukrainian President Volodimir) Zelensky,» Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.
«We regard this crazy idea as a new advertising campaign by Washington, which has been trying for some time now to present the Kiev regime as a kind of peacemaker,» she added, as picked up by the Russian news agency TASS.
In this regard, Zakharova has charged against Ukraine’s proposal that Russia can participate only if it withdraws from Ukrainian territory and puts an end to the invasion. «They have reached a point where they present any extravagant idea and present it under any international legal form,» she has maintained, before stressing that «the aim is to do it in a way to protect themselves without recognizing the obvious.»
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed on Wednesday that there is no «peace plan» with Ukraine if it does not take into account the current status of the four Ukrainian regions recently annexed following dubious popular consultations that have not been recognized beyond Moscow and Minsk.
Zelenski recently stated that among the issues he had discussed with his U.S. counterpart, Joe Biden, during his recent visit to Washington was a proposal by Kiev to hold a «peace summit» within the United Nations at the end of February, but without the presence of Russia.
