Estonian politician Edgar Savisaar, who was Estonia’s first head of government after its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, died Thursday afternoon at the age of 72 at the Central Hospital in Ida-Tallinn.
The Baltic country today paid tribute to one of its leading political personalities and key figures in the post-Soviet era who pushed for the country’s independence more than 30 years ago and led the transitional government before resigning in January 1992.
«Savisaar was one of the great figures of the Estonian political landscape and played a key role in rebuilding the newly independent Estonia,» the Estonian government confirmed through a message on Facebook.
From 2001 to 2004 and also from 2007 to 2017, the Center Party politician served as mayor of Tallinn. He also served as chairman of the Tallinn City Council from 1996 to 1999 and in 2005, as reported by the Estonian media ‘ERR News’.
