The Ukrainian government on Friday unilaterally suspended its agreement with Russia, in force since October 1992, for the joint use and protection of water bodies bordering the two nations.
This was confirmed by the government representative to the Parliament, Taras Melnichuk on his Telegram channel. «The Agreement between Ukraine and the Russian Federation on joint use and protection of border water bodies (…) has been terminated,» he said.
Ukraine and Russia take advantage of several rivers — such as the Donets, the Derkul, the Aidar or the Sinyak — and lakes to outline their border boundaries, especially in the southern part, in the area known as Ukrainian Donbas and annexed by Moscow at the end of September.
