The environmental collective Extinction Rebellion has announced the suspension of its blockades in the United Kingdom to devote its next efforts to organizing a large demonstration against the British government in April.
«We’re calling it quits,» the organization announced on its Twitter account. «Our New Year’s resolution will be to stop our public disruption tactics,» it has confirmed.
The organization has for months staged several actions that have paralyzed the transit of vehicles and people in the UK and other countries around the world to raise awareness of the need to combat the climate crisis, in the face of critics who describe these «tactics» as ineffective and annoying.
One of the latest operations took place last month at Amsterdam-Schiphol International Airport, when more than 200 activists from Extinction Rebellion and Greenpeace were arrested after occupying an area used by private aircraft for hours.
«We recognize and celebrate the power of disruption to raise the alarm and believe that constantly evolving tactics are a necessary approach. What is most needed now is to disrupt the abuse of power and imbalance, in order to achieve a transition to a just society,» they explain in a statement posted on their website.
«Instead,» it adds, «we call on everyone to help us disrupt this corrupt government,» according to the message accompanied by the slogan «Choose your future» and by the day and place of the march: April 21, in front of the British Parliament.
