At least a dozen members of the jihadist group Al Shabaab have been killed following a clash between two rival factions of the organization in the Somali region of Mudug.
The clash occurred in the town of Amara after a group of militiamen, led by senior commander Muhyadin Daqare, announced their intention to leave the area to surrender to Somali government security forces.
To prevent this, another senior commander, identified as Nunale, ordered his fighters to shoot to kill any element that joined Daqara’s request.
The clashes, according to Somali government sources, have resulted in numerous militiamen captured by their former comrades and an order from the group’s leadership that strictly forbids its commanders to leave their designated area of operations by vehicle, reports Hiiran On Line on Sunday.
Al Shabaab has not commented on this information.
Somalia has in recent months stepped up offensives against Al Shabaab with the support of clans and local militias as part of a series of decisions taken by President Hassan Shaykh Mohamud, who pledged upon taking office to put the fight against terrorism at the center of his efforts to stabilize the African country.
