Archive – Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega – PRESIDENCIA NICARAGUA

The government of Daniel Ortega has reported that the Nicaraguan president visited his brother, Humberto Ortega, a critic of the authoritarian drift of the current regime, on December 23, but has emphasized that it was only a «humanitarian meeting» in which no political issues were discussed.

The Presidency explained in a press release that the President’s younger brother suffers «serious health problems» and that, «encouraged by family ties», Daniel Ortega decided to visit him at his home on the night of December 23.

He did so, according to the official version, «without any pretension or political exchange, which was never the objective of his visit, since at that level there is no communication whatsoever, nor is it foreseen». It is not in vain that the two brothers have distanced themselves in recent years, in which Humberto, a former military chief, has publicly criticized repressive measures of the Government.

The authorities want to make «absolutely clear» that there is no interest beyond the humanitarian one, warning that any other «version» of what happened is a «senseless manipulation» and a «complete falsehood», according to the note released by the official media.
