The French frigate ‘Guépratte’ has seized 4 tons of narcotics, mainly cannabis resin and heroin, worth 50 million euros in waters near the Persian Gulf.
The French Navy ship, a La Fayette frigate, was on patrol near the Strait of Hormuz on December 27 when it intercepted a dhow – an Arab triangular-sailed vessel – carrying nearly 500 kilos of heroin and almost four tons of cannabis resin.
The operation falls under the remit of Combined Task Force 150 (CTF 150), a mission with Saudi and other countries’ collaboration to prevent criminal and terrorist activities in the waters of the Persian Gulf region.
«These drugs were probably destined for the European market and could have reached a total amount of 50 million euros which have thus been taken away from the criminal networks destabilizing the region,» explained the French Navy in an official statement.
