Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry delivered a speech on Sunday promising to hold general elections, as he did last year.
Henry, at the commemoration of the country’s independence in the capital, Port-a-Prince, renewed the commitment to hold the next electoral contest during 2023.
«Elections are a necessary step to return power to elected officials chosen with knowledge and discernment by the Haitian people. I repeat, the National Palace will be occupied by a president freely elected by the people,» he declared, according to the newspaper ‘Gazette Haiti’.
«All true democrats must seize the opportunity offered to join the national consensus and contribute together with the Government in the definition of a road map that will include the strategies and actions to be implemented for the organization of the next elections,» Henry has reiterated through a series of messages on his profile on the social network Twitter.
Henry, who reached an agreement with political parties and civil society organizations at the end of December to leave office within 14 months and facilitate a transition of power in the country, has also announced the installation of the members of the High Transitional Council.
The agreement, with the signing of the National Consensus for an Inclusive Transition and Transparent Elections, was adopted at the Karibe hotel, located on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince, according to the newspaper ‘Le Nouvelliste’.
«Yesterday afternoon we held a council of ministers to validate the document of national commitment and send it to the official newspaper Le Moniteur for its publication», explained the ‘premier’, before stressing that «in this year of 2023, we will have to learn to trust each other».
«I ask you to take me seriously when I speak to you of my government’s desire to do everything possible to reconstitute our democratic institutions. It is not with distrust that we assemble a team to face together the dangers that loom over our common homeland,» he concluded.
