Iran’s Supreme Court Chief Justice Gholam Hosein Mohseni Ejei said Monday that 3,000 prisoners will be released in the coming days on the anniversary, which falls on Tuesday, of the death of General Qasem Soleimani following a U.S. bombing in Iraq in January 2020.
Iran’s top judicial representative has also indicated that the death sentences of 16 convicts will be reduced. This decision has been taken, according to Mohseni Ejei, in commemoration of Soleimani, who made numerous efforts to help the needy, IRNA news agency reported.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hosein Amirabdolahian on Sunday accused the United States of blocking — «throwing stones and putting obstacles» — the investigation into the general’s death, adding that the authorities will follow «the necessary legal paths» to clarify the details of his death.
Soleimani was one of the victims of a drone attack — which led Iraq’s Parliament to demand the departure of international troops from the country — perpetrated by the United States in January 2020, which also included Abu Mahdi al Muhandis, then ‘number two’ of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) — a coalition of Iraqi pro-government militias supported by Iran –.
