Malaysian authorities on Wednesday denied that restrictions on entry into the country imposed as a measure to curb coronavirus infections are intended to «discriminate» against countries such as China, which has seen a significant increase in infections.
The Malaysian Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, has indicated that the decision responds only to health reasons and has pointed out during a press conference that the health of the population is the «main concern of the Government», something that «will not be subordinated to tourism or economic growth», according to information reported by the newspaper ‘The Straits Times’.
«We have decided not to discriminate against any country because if we look at the rate of infections in China we can also talk about the high number of deaths in the United States by the COVID-19,» he said before stressing that «we take these measures to save our citizens.» «Whoever comes to the country should be supervised and subject to the same conditions of entry,» he said.
Thus, he has expressed concern about the increasing influx of people from China, scheduled for this weekend. «Last year there was no peak of contagions in relation to the entry of people from other countries. This does not imply that we are going to reduce restrictions, we have to monitor everything properly,» he stressed «We do not want to take measures based on information of this kind. If we look at the global situation, the problem is more complex than that,» he said.
